Victorian Figured Walnut Open Bookcase by James Shoolbred & Co, London C.1870

$985.00

A handsome Victorian figured walnut open bookcase from the workshops of James Shoolbred & Co, the celebrated Tottenham Court Road furnishers of London. Circa 1870.

The moulded cornice top carries richly figured walnut with a lovely warm colour and a deep, glowing patina built up over 150 years or more. The sides are equally well figured, and the whole stands on a solid plinth base. The adjustable shelves can be set to suit books of any height, so this antique bookcase is as practical today as when it was made. Its low, dwarf proportions make it a versatile piece for a library, study, living room or hallway, and the top is a useful surface for lamps, pictures or objects.

Part of the original James Shoolbred & Co ivorine maker's label remains on the back, identifying Tottenham House, Tottenham Court Road, London. Shoolbred was among the leading furnishing houses of Victorian London, and the label is a welcome mark of provenance.

Condition is good, with nice colour and a lovely, deep patina and the gentle age-related wear expected of a Victorian bookcase of this date.
