Large Victorian Australian Cedar Three-Tier Dumb Waiter, Circa 1870

$1,350.00

An imposing and well proportioned Australian Colonial dumb waiter in solid Australian cedar, Circa 1870. Three generous open shelves, each with a raised gallery to the back and sides and a neatly moulded edge, are carried on bold turned baluster uprights joined through square blocks. Turned finials crown the corner posts, and the turned feet sit on their original porcelain castors, which roll freely.

Dumb waiters like this were the Victorian answer to the serving buffet, standing beside the dining table to hold plates, dishes and decanters within easy reach. Today this one works just as well as a stylish serving trolley, a buffet in a dining room or kitchen, or open display and storage in a hallway or sitting room.

The cedar has a warm, glowing colour and nice grain, with a good mellow patina. It is in lovely original condition, with a sound, solid frame.
