A handsome Georgian mahogany chest on chest (tallboy), Circa 1790-1810, of classic English form and generous proportions. The upper section has a well-moulded cornice over two short and three long graduated drawers, flanked by canted corners. It sits on a waisted lower chest of three full-width long drawers, standing on shaped bracket feet.
The mahogany is the real attraction of this tall chest of drawers. The drawer fronts are cut from richly figured, flame-grained timber, and the sides are equally good. It has a lovely warm colour and a soft, mellow patina that only comes with age. The drawers are oak-lined and finished with a fine cockbeaded edge.
The stamped brass ring handles are replacements, but they are entirely appropriate to the period. They are neoclassical in design and suit the chest well. This antique chest-on-chest is in good, honest condition, and it is a practical, elegant piece of Georgian storage that will bring height, warmth and presence to a bedroom, dressing room or living area.
