A handsome French Provincial farmhouse table, built to seat six to eight comfortably. The base is fruitwood, most likely cherry, with a deep, mellow colour and the clean, tapering square legs typical of provincial French cabinetmaking. The joints are pinned, and it has a single frieze drawer with a brass pull to one end.
The four plank oak top has a rich, well developed patina, with lively figuring, natural knots and the soft wear of generations of daily use. The base dates from the early to mid 19th century, and the oak top, a later 19th century replacement, has aged to sit comfortably with it. The table is in good, solid condition, stable and ready to use as a kitchen or dining table.
