Carved English Oak Coffer, C.1680-1720

$1,295.00

A late 17th century English oak coffer, Circa 1680-1720, with a three-panel front carved with interlocking roundels around a central rosette. The panels sit in a frame-and-panel construction, divided by carved muntins and flanked by carved stiles. Above them runs a bold arcaded frieze, and the lower rail is carved with a gouge-cut border. The stiles extend down to form stile feet, which keep the chest clear of the floor.

The two plank top has a moulded edge and a deep, nicely waxed finish with plenty of age. The lid is hung on replacement iron strap hinges. The coffer has some fabulous very old repairs, honest signs of three centuries of use as a blanket chest, and the interior is clean and solid with a plank base and panelled sides.

A handsome piece of early oak that suits an entrance, hall, bedroom or the end of a bed, and works equally well as a coffee table or as storage for linen and throws. It's in good, sound condition with a lovely colour.
