Antique Carved Oak Coffer, Northern English, Circa 1680-1720

$1,390.00

A charming joined oak coffer, Circa 1680-1720, most likely made in Northern England. The front is carved with a lively frieze of lozenges and flower-head roundels set against a lattice ground, above three panels each centred on a carved lozenge enclosing a rosette. A band of carved lunettes runs along the lower rail, completing a well-balanced and generously decorated front.

The coffer is peg-jointed throughout, with plain panelled ends and back, and stands on stile feet formed from the extended uprights. The two-plank oak top overhangs and turns on wooden pivot hinges rather than metal ones, a traditional and characterful detail of early provincial joinery.

The colour and patina are wonderful: a deep, warm, glowing brown with a soft sheen built up over three centuries of use and waxing, and the top shows lovely variation in tone and figure. In good period condition, with a couple of sound old repairs that are in keeping with its age and age-related wear and natural marks to the top. A versatile antique oak chest, equally suited to storing linen or blankets at the foot of a bed, in a hallway or as a useful seat.
