A handsome Victorian pot cupboard in richly figured burr walnut, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. The case is of pleasing pedestal form, with canted corners rising to a moulded, shaped top, and a single panelled door below, flanked by a moulded frieze rail. The door retains its original push-button latch mechanism in place of a conventional handle. The whole stands on a shaped, stepped plinth base
The burr walnut veneers throughout show excellent figuring and colour, with a warm, well-cared-for patina consistent with age. Originally designed to house a chamber pot beside the bed, this piece now makes a wonderfully characterful bedside cabinet or nightstand, equally at home as a occasional cupboard elsewhere in the house — in a hallway, sitting room, or beside an armchair.
