19th Century Australian Huon Pine Chest of Drawers

Sold

A substantial and well-made Australian colonial chest of drawers in Huon pine, the drawer fronts veneered in birdseye burr of excellent figure. The timber shifts from pale gold to deep amber across the panels, the characteristic swirling pattern of the burr giving each drawer front its own distinct character.

Generous configuration with a shaped serpentine top above a frieze drawer, then a row of three smaller drawers flanking a central carved panel decorated with acanthus foliage and a flower head within an oval surround, over three long graduated drawers below. The whole is raised on turned bun feet. The flanking pilasters are beautifully carved with acanthus leaves, fruit, and scrollwork. Brass drop handles throughout.

The drawer interiors show clean secondary timber construction with locks intact. The piece has been sympathetically restored and retains a rich, even patina.
