A handsome example of the French provincial enfilade or buffet in solid oak, dating to the latter half of the eighteenth century and most likely originating from Burgundy or the Loire Valley. Of classic form : two arched and fielded panel doors flanking a central bank of three graduated drawers, the whole raised on cabriole legs with characteristic scroll feet and unified by a shaped serpentine apron. The moulded panel surrounds on both doors and drawer fronts show the restrained Rococo influence that defines the best regional cabinetmaking of the Louis XV period — carved in oak rather than walnut, which points to a northern French province.
The original cast and chased iron hardware is intact throughout — escutcheon plates with foliate detailing, bail handles, and working lock plates, all with their original tasselled keys still present. Hardware of this quality and completeness is increasingly hard to find. The top is planked in wide-board oak and carries a fine, undisturbed patina built over two and a half centuries of use: dark along the edges, lighter toward the centre, with the surface checking and wear marks that only genuine age produces.
Construction is entirely pegged and hand-fitted with no evidence of later structural intervention. The oak throughout has the dense, close grain associated with slow-grown French timber of the period.
A versatile and beautifully proportioned piece that works equally well as a sideboard, media unit, or hallway cabinet in a contemporary interior.
