A handsome Edwardian solid walnut bookcase, Circa 1910, of smaller and more accommodating proportions than the typical Edwardian bookcase or bookcase cabinet — well suited to a smaller room or apartment. The upper section features a moulded cornice above a carved leaf-and-tongue frieze, fitted with a pair of astragal glazed doors in a diamond lattice pattern with original brass escutcheons and tasselled keys, enclosing adjustable shelving. The base comprises two drawers with carved swag and ribbon detail to the fronts, above a pair of panelled cupboard doors carved in a restrained Art Nouveau design of stylised lilies and scrolling foliage. Raised on a plinth base.
Solid walnut throughout, with a rich original patina. Excellent original condition — glass panes intact and original, locks and keys present and working, carving crisp and undamaged. A versatile antique bookcase or display cabinet, equally suited as a china cabinet or bookshelf.
