19th Century English Oak Iron-Bound Silver Chest

$0.00
Sold

A substantial 19th century English oak silver chest, iron-bound throughout with heavy riveted strapwork banding to the top, sides and front. The lid is fitted with a hasp and staple lock, and the case retains its original wrought iron ring carrying handles to each end. Constructed from solid oak planking with a rounded top edge, the strapwork forms a cross pattern to the lid and continues in banded sections down each face - typical of the security fittings used to protect silver and other valuables during transit or storage.

The chest presents in lovely condition for its age, with a rich, deep patina to the oak and honest wear consistent with genuine use. The iron work retains an attractive dark aged finish with scattered surface oxidation, adding to the character rather than detracting from it. A striking piece with strong sculptural presence, equally at home as a coffee table, blanket box, or standalone decorative object.

Also known as: strongbox, coffer, deed box, treasure chest.
